The
Nez Perce and the Dawes Act
Based on the PBS series, this lesson assists the students in
debating alternative legislation to the Dawes Act and evaluating the
motives behind the passage of the act.
The Transcontinental Railroad
Using maps and other
documents, students investigate how and why the railroad was built; they
also analyze its impact upon Chinese laborers, Native Americans,
settlers, tourists, entrepreneurs, and others.
The Fragile Western Biome
Throughout this lesson, students will
discover the impact of American westward expansion, in particular the
mining industry, on the ecosystems of the West.
Adeline Hornbek and the Homestead Act
A Colorado Success Story:
Students will step into the shoes of Adeline Hornbek, a single mother of
four who became a successful homesteader in Colorado.
Women's Suffrage: Why the West First?
Students will
discuss the particulars in the granting of full voting rights to women
in several Western states and list some women especially involved in the
Western suffrage movement and supply some important facts from their
biographies
Journeys West.
Teacher directed lecture to the whole
group on the expansion of the American west using overland trails.
Students demonstrate mastery of the learning objects through a
historical role-play product, and completion of a short answer based
test.
