Grade 1, Social Studies
Std 11:
Identify roles and responsibilities of leaders within the community and state.
                 • Recognizing how laws protect rights and property
                 • Identifying reasons for having rules at home and at school

Lesson Plans:

Community Helpers  Students will be learning about community helpers.  they will look at several different community helpers individually, and discuss their jobs and how they are helpful.  Students will decide which community helper they think is the most important and why.  Finally, the students will create a presentation which shows their favorite community helpers.

Piggy Tale Election
The student will be able to analyze the stories of the characters and decide which story was true by participating in the process of voting.

Family Rules
Students will identify various family and school rules, make connections among rules, their purposes, and the possible consequences of breaking them, and organize rules according to categories.

Rules and Responsibilities Youth and the Process of Change
This activity gives an opportunity to study, analyze, and discuss what changes, if any, should be made with their school laws.

Teamwork
This activity will give students the opportunity to consider what is involved in cooperative efforts, why real teamwork can be very effective, and how to offer suggestions for improving cooperation in their own classroom.

Rules/Laws  Students develop an awareness of government by exploring the structure of classroom rules and their responsibilities as students.

 

Resources:

Virtual Field Trip: Visit places in a community such as a park, library, and city hall.  (Good for Smartboard K-5)

Macmillan/McGraw-Hill Social Studies 2003:  Lesson summaries and lesson reviews about citizenship.

Tortoise and the Hare: This wonderful new version of The Tortoise and the Hare shows what the speedy hare might have been like in the classroom.  (Good for Smartboard K-2)

Understanding Good Citizenship:  Explore the responsibilities of citizens in a democracy and the factors to consider in selecting leaders.  Short video from United Streaming.

Community Rules and Laws:  Explore rules in the home and at school and laws in the community to see how they benefit society. Learn how public officials create laws, and examine some of the consequences people face when they break them.  Short video from United Streaming.

Suggestions for English Language Learners:

Students provide suggestions for classroom or school rules based on pictures, lists, models, and experiences.

Students discuss the importance of classroom or school rules.

Students make a timeline of events of the life of one of the history makers in Let’s Read Biography with a partner or cooperative learning group.
