 Identify how occupational and recreational opportunities in Alabama and local communities are affected by the physical environment.

Lesson Plans:

The Three Little Pigs in Earthquake Land
Students will be introduced to some basic concepts of physical geography as well as some of the ways in which the physical environment affects people’s lives.

Your Town in the Past, Present, and Future
Students will apply the study of geography to planning for their future.  (Adaptable for K-1, written for 3-5)

The Shoemaker's Tools
Learn about capital resources in this lesson, using the shoemaking business as an example.

Trade and Transportation in the United States
Students will imagine what it would be like to operate a plane, train, or truck along a trade route across the United States.

Community Helpers
Students will list many, varied, and unusual jobs that people might have, identify the purpose of the work done by their parents, either in the home or outside of the home, become aware of and appreciate many different jobs that make a successful community, and involve parents in a school learning activity.

What Do You Want To Be?
Students will explore various jobs and decide what they might want to be when they grow up through an interactive activity.

Members of the Community
Students will create a representation of a community member and present it to the class.

United States Postal Service
The students will acquire knowledge and appreciation of the postal system.

Communities  Students will discuss ways in which rural communities differ from urban communities and decide in which type on community they live.

Geographic Changes  Students will discuss geographic changes which have occurred in their community, their causes, and how the changes have affected people who live there.

 

Resources:

Native Prairie to the Present: Our Agricultural Heritage - Learn about farms today and hundreds of years ago. How has the land changed? What was it like to be a pioneer? How is corn produced and what is it used for?  (Good for Smartboard K-5).    

I Believe in Me:  Information about various careers. 

Suggestions for English Language Learners:

Students describe roles of community workers from pictures.
(D) Students describe personal encounters with community workers.

Students explain importance of community workers.

 Students gather pictures of neighborhoods, new shopping malls and highways in their current city or homeland.
(E/B, D, E) Students listen to speakers from different industries and draw pictures to explain what they understood.
