Lesson Plans:

Crimes from Mother Goose
Students use nursery rhymes in a discussion of crimes and criminals. By use of a chart, students decide on identity of criminals, the crime, and name the punishment as told in the rhyme.

Was It the Pied Piper's Fault?
Students will explore responsibility by considering situations from children's literature.

The Ugly Duckling: A Discussion of Human Rights
Students will become more aware of their relationship to human rights in regards to equality, justice, fairness, civil rights, and social justice.
 

 

Resources:

Teaching Citizenship’s Five Themes: These activities, which  develop those themes, are divided by grade.

Local, State, National  Students will explore the different levels of government and responsibilities of each.  They will also explore how tax money is used by each level of government and plan their own simulated budget for their school system, school, and classroom.  

Ben's Guide to U.S. Government for Kids:  This site provides learning tools for K-12 students, parents, and teachers.  These resources will teach how our government works, the use of the primary source materials of the U.S. Government Printing Office, and how one can use GPO Access to carry out their civic responsibilities.  

Suggestions for English Language Learners:

(E/B) Students name and relate information about leaders or important figures depicted in illustrations.

Students give examples of what people do to become leaders or important figures.
(E/B, D) Students discuss the role of a class president.
(E/B, D) Students match pictures of community leaders to their role after discussion of community.
(E/B, D) Students participate in a mock election for class officers from ballot on chalkboard.
(E/B, D) Read The Flag We Love and discuss patriotism.
(D, E) Students compare/contrast leaders or important figures using a Venn diagram.
