Biographies of Heroes
In this unit, students will focus on people who make a difference.

Learning Centers
Students will explore the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Portrait of a Hero
Students will be able to understand the meaning of the words hero and heroic.

Strides for Women Posters
Students research the lives of accomplished women and create posters displaying the information.

Johnny Appleseed Day Research Activity  Students will learn about Johnny Appleseed (John Chapman) and other people who do not have a day named after them, but should due to their contribution to society.

The Mayflower Passengers and Their First Year in America  Students will be able to understand the reasons why the Pilgrims and other passengers came to America, review the history of the Pilgrims' Thanksgiving with the Indians, and understand stories about the Pilgrims and the Thanksgiving of 1621. 

What Was the World of the Wampanoag Indians and the Pilgrims Like Around the 1620s?  Students will be able to gain an understanding of the life of the Wampanoag Indians, and extend their understanding of Pilgrim life and compare it to the Indians.

Booker T. Washington Web Museum for Young Students: Site has a virtual storybook and museum along with student activities and teacher notes.  (Good for Smartboard K-3)

All About Martin Luther King, Jr.:  An overview of his life.

Academy of Achievement: This site brings you face to face with the extraordinary individuals who have shaped the twentieth century. It is an amazing collection, but of people and ideas that fill you with inspiration, encouragement, and the will to achieve.                                           

Famous People: Selected portraits from the collections of the Library of Congress.      

Abraham Lincoln: This site has activities and pictures of what pioneer life was like during Lincoln's childhood in Illinois.

George Washington Carver:  A printable coloring book.

Crispus Attucks  Born an slave, he was the first African-American person to die during American's struggle for freedom from England.

Frederick Douglass  Frederick Douglass was one of the foremost leaders of the abolitionist movement, which fought to end slavery within the United States in the decades prior to the Civil War.

Books About the Underground Railroad (ages 4-8)  Includes biographical information on various people.

Books About Immigration (grades 2-4)  Includes some biographical information.

Immigration: Stories of Yesterday and Today  Find out what it means to come to the United States as an immigrant from the early 20th century through the early 21st century.  Teacher's Guide and Related Book List available.  Good for Smartboard, as well as independent study activity.

American Heroes and Heroines: Abraham Lincoln:  Viewers are transported to pioneer times in mid-America, where they see scenes from Lincoln’s childhood in Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois...  Short video from United Streaming.

American Heroes and Heroines: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.:  A combination of costumed re-enactments and archival footage of the civil rights movement shows how our country’s foremost civil rights leader transformed race relations in America.  Short video from United Streaming.

American Heroes and Heroines: George Washington:  George Washington overcame difficulties throughout his life to become a true American hero.  Short video from United Streaming.

The English Come to America: Jamestown and Plymouth  This program takes a look at the first English settlements in America: Jamestown and Plymouth. By viewing this program students will find out who the colonists were, from where they came, why they came, how they crossed the ocean, and the things they did to create settlements in the American wilderness.  Short video from United Streaming.
