Lesson Plans:

I Have a Dream
Students will relate the past with the present, encourage peaceful social activism to enable change, and encourage awareness of current events.

Riding the Bus - Taking a Stand
Students will identify the policy of segregation which existed in Alabama, define the legal idea of being "separate but equal", define and describe an editorial, discuss the impact of social unrest and inequality upon economic development, describe Dr. King's theory of non-violence and its impact upon the Civil Rights Movement.

The Opinions of the Public
Students will discuss the importance of America's constitutional right to free speech, discuss the difficulty of dealing with public opinion as an elected official, identify the importance of public discussion and the election process, and identify some of the key issues facing Governor Wallace in 1962-1963 and the divergent opinions of Alabama citizens on these issues.

Famous Alabamians: Helping Me Learn How I, Too, Can Make a Difference!  Students will work to create their choice of a presentation on an Alabama citizen who has made a difference in the state, as well as the nation.

Civil Rights Movement Unit  A five-lesson unit including: Riding the Bus-Taking a Stand; The Opinions of the Public; Birmingham 1963; Marching for Justice-Selma to Montgomery; Voting Rights  (AL Dept. of Archives & History)

Alabama Experience: Thunder in Huntsville:  Alabama played an important role in putting a man on the moon. This is the story of that role and the tremendous national effort it took to make that happen and Huntsville's part in the space race.  United Streaming.

Alabama Experience: Tuskegee: Living Black and White:  From the coming of the slaves in the 1840's, continuing through the founding of Tuskegee Institute in 1881, the hospital for black veterans in 1923, the training facility for black pilots in 1941, the Civil Rights battles, the integration of schools and the violence during the 60's and 70's, all the way to the present day situations in Tuskegee the important issues of each period are explored.  United Streaming.

Alabama Experience: Dance of Identity:  A Black dancer who grew up in Tuskegee during the 50's and 60's discusses her hopes for people who believe that 'classical arts' are white.  Beautiful dance performances are shown throughout the video.  United Streaming.

Alabama Experience: With Fingers of Love:  The story of the Quilts (and quilters) of Gees' Bend.  United Streaming.
