Lesson Plans:

The War of 1812
Students will explore the consequences of the War of 1812 and the major battles, leaders, and events leading to a final peace.

Oh, Say Can You See What the Star-Spangled Banner Means?
Students will indicate phrases from "The Star-Spangled Banner" that refer to the bombardment of
Fort McHenry, list ways in which the American flag is used, discuss the symbols within the American flag, and identify some ways in which the flag has been used as a symbol of the Unites States.

The students will interpret the figurative language of the first verse of "The Star-Spangled Banner" to create an illustration, and rewrite the first verse using their own words.

The War of 1812  In this unit, students will learn about our country's history by studying the events leading up to and during the War 1812.

Oh, Say Can You See and Learn About The War of 1812?  In this unit, students will become knowledgeable about America's history as they actively study The War of 1812.  The lessons and activities are designed to encourage higher thinking skills.  the unit will integrate skills in the subjects of language arts, math, music, art, and technology.  At the completion of the unit the students will comprehend how people and events in the past have influenced their quality of life.

Conflict in America  The goals of this unit are for students to become aware of historical figures and events that develop a sense of empathy.  Students will learn how different beliefs in a society can cause conflicts; will become aware of how the conflicts of our past have affected the civil rights we enjoy today...

Early Presidents  This is a unit on the first seven presidents of the US.  This period of history is unique because of the presidents' roles in the application of a new Constitution to untested issues.  During the first few lessons students work cooperatively to understand the role of a president in the US and then divide into small groups to research one of the early presidents...

(E/B) Students identify causes and major events occurring during the War of 1812 depicted in illustrations and phrases.
(D) Students compare/contrast two major events occurring during the War of 1812 using graphic organizers with a word box and written descriptions.
(E) Students interpret the causes of one major event that occurred during the War of 1812 from social studies texts, trade books and the Internet.
