Birthplace of the Modern Presidency
This is a "Teaching with Historic Places" lesson plan. Created by
National Park Service interpreters, preservation professionals, and
educators, these lessons use historic sites to explore American
history.
Woodrow Wilson: Prophet of Peace
This lesson plan is also part of
the National Park Service's
"Teaching with
Historic Places" website (see above).
The four (4) lessons below were created to accompany the
PBS film
documentary about Woodrow Wilson. Nevertheless, the lessons can be
used independently from the film. Also, lessons may have to be
modified to fit middle school due to grade level recommendations.
Woodrow Wilson: Women's Suffrage
In this lesson, students will learn
about the last phases of the woman's suffrage movement, understand
President Wilson's presidency from the perspective of women seeking
suffrage, and identify the obstacles faced by the suffragists and the
strategies they used to overcome them.
Woodrow Wilson and African Americans
The objectives in this lesson
are to list the domestic and international successes and failures of
Wilson's administration. In addition,
students will learn about the fight waged by African Americans to
attain rights from 1912-1920 and identify the contributions made by
African Americans to American literature, music, sciences, etc. of the
time period.
Woodrow Wilson: The Presidential Election of 1912
In this lesson,
students learn about the issues facing voters in the 1912 election,
become familiar with the four main candidates in the 1912 presidential
election and their positions on the issues, and learn to think
critically about formulating a political campaign strategy.
Woodrow Wilson: War and Peace
In this lesson, students learn about
the factors contributing to World War I, become familiar about the
decision making process which led America into war, and learn about
the history and development of the League of Nations.
