Std 7.4: Describing the impact of the Tennessee Valley (TVA) on the life of Alabamians

Lesson Plans:

"TVA: Electricity for All"
In this lesson students apply skills to cartoons that appeared during the TVA years and come to see that political cartoons provide insight into different sides of contemporary and historical issues.

Human Impacts on Major Rivers of the World
Humans continue to explore ways of adapting river systems to meet identified needs or desires. These adaptations often result in long term impacts on the environment and require humans to modify their behavior in response to such changes. This cause and effect relationship is especially observable in many of the world's major river systems.

Rivers of Destiny
Students will be able to explain the importance of rivers in the natural balance of life on Earth, identify what happens when people begin to tamper with rivers, and offer suggestions for dealing with the outcomes of human intervention.

"The Tennessee River: The Tie That Binds"
This activity requires students to analyze maps, charts, and graphs in order to determine the most efficient method of transporting bulk products to markets.

Changing Nature’s Course: A Look at the Kissimmee River
In this lesson, students will learn about a major event in which humans modified the physical environment in the United States.

Resources:

Human Impacts on Biodiversity
An Information Bulletin on Environmental Change.

The New Deal: Alphabet Soup of Agencies
This activity sheet provides students with each agency and they include the correct information.

The New Deal Network
This site includes many relevant links on all things "New Deal."

POTUS (Presidents of the United States)
In this resource you will find background information on each of the presidents, including Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR).

The five (5) links below are part of the Library of Congress' unit on the Great Depression, Figuring Somepin' 'Bout the Great Depression. They all offer great ways for students to interpret primary sources about the Great Depression:
Walker Evans Image Project
Depression era photos of the hard life by this FSA photographer.

New Deal Network
The Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute (FERI), in collaboration with the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library, Marist College, and IBM, launched the New Deal Network (NDN). The site features 20,000 items: photographs, speeches, letters, documents, and exercises from the New Deal era.

Breadline: 1929-1939
Part of PBS's People's Century television series, this site explores the massive unemployment in America during the Depression and offers interviews, a timeline, and a teacher's guide

Digital History Resource Guides
The Digital Resource Guides provides links to American history web sites by period and provide historical overviews, readings (online textbook chapter, Reader's Companion) primary source documents (documents, maps, cartoons), teaching resources (chronologies, maps, quizzes), audio-visual resources, and additional resources. It is an excellent and comprehensive teaching resource.
