Std 14: Identify cultural and economic changes throughout the United States from 1960 to the present.

Lesson Plans:

The Cold War: America During the 1950s
Through the creation of a "guide book," students learn about what America was like during the 1950s and the cold war. Students work in small groups and conduct a "WebQuest."

The Sixties
This activity explores emotions of eagerness, frustration, betrayal, community, and compassion during the 1960s. Students will examine this entire document, including all the links, and write a 5-page paper or an equivalent web page (no frills necessary except links) where they take up a position and perspective chosen from the four options provided.

America: A Nation of Immigrants
In this interdisciplinary unit, students learn about the personal stories of immigrants, culture, and ethnic discrimination.  Lesson plans and project ideas are included.

Dead "Man" Walking: Considering the Fate of Juvenile Offenders in the Face of Capital Punishment
In this lesson, students learn about science's contribution to the debate over whether juvenile offenders should be eligible for capital punishment.

Drawing the Line at Freedom?
Exploring Ways in Which the Rules of Democracy Have Changed in an Age of Terrorism: In this lesson, students explore civil liberties as they relate to the events of September 11, 2001 and the months that followed, and discuss how these circumstances may or may not have altered the rights of American citizens and foreigners visiting the United States.

Drums of War: Exploring How Politics Shapes American War Policy
In this New York Times lesson, students will research the political climate prior to major American wars of the past, then reflect on the current call for power to confront Iraq.

The Great Depression and the 1990's
By using the American Memory's American Life Histories, 1936-1940 documents, personal interviews, and the Library of Congress's on-line legislative information, students will be able to gain a better understanding of why the government takes care of its people and how this type of welfare state started. Armed with this knowledge, they can then evaluate the current need of government programs, such as welfare, Medicare and Social Security, on the federal and state level.

Defining Terrorism: This lesson poses the question, "What is a terrorist?"
Students will have an opportunity to explore the debate over legitimate and illegitimate uses of force and the distinction between terrorists and freedom fighters. Students will explore a framework for analyzing political violence and terrorism, apply this framework to historical and contemporary case studies, and develop a working definition of terrorism.

Remembering September 11
This lesson plan serves as a basis for discussion and reflection on the anniversary of September 11, 2001. It consists of four parts which can be used separately or together.
