Std 6:  Trace the expansion of the Roman Republic and its transformation into an empire, including key geographic, political, and economic elements    

Lesson Plans:

Rome's Rise to Power: The Republic
Students will understand ancient Rome experienced several forms of government.

The Legacy of Rome
As a result of this activity, students will understand how institutions and achievements of ancient Rome have evolved.

The Life of Roman Soldiers
In this lesson students will review facts about the Roman Empire and Vindolanda (Roman fort in northern Britain), research the life of Roman soldiers, and write fictional letters from the Roman front. (Lesson may be modified if video not available.)

The Roman Empire in the First Century
The Roman Empire in the First Century provides a detailed look at the emperors of the time as well as other important historical figures. In addition, students are able to learn about the daily life of ancient Romans. They will gain a better understanding of the significant achievements and contributions made by the Romans.

Below are eight (8) lesson plans, video clips (Requires free Real Player.) and interactive features such as the Emperor of Rome Game, Who Are You? Quiz, Virtual Library, and the Timeline. These all showcase some of the most intriguing and historically significant people, places, and events from first century Rome. As part of this, students study world history, social studies, geography, science, mathematics, communication arts, religion, sociology, behavioral studies, current events, mythology, economics, theater, and engineering design in grades 6-12.

Lesson 1: When in Rome....
The focus of this lesson is for students to get an understanding of the Roman lifestyle - what did they wear, eat, and do for fun? Where did they live, work, and relax? What were the common customs and traditions, religious beliefs, and culture like?

Lesson 2: Getting to Know the Emperors of Rome
In this lesson, students will discuss the merits of heredity rule and some of the problems of choosing a leader who is imposed upon a country.

Lesson 3: Religion in Politics and Daily Life
Students will examine various aspects of religion in ancient Rome including the role of mythology, polytheism versus monotheism, the treatment of Jews and Christians, and the spread of Christianity.

Lesson 4: Mapping an Empire
In this lesson, students will compare a map of the Roman Empire in 44 BC with one of the Roman Empire in 116 AD. Using these two maps as a reference, students will use critical reading skills to learn about the expansion of the Roman Empire during that time period.

Lesson 5: Who's Who in Roman History
Students will produce a classroom documentary about important historical figures from the Roman Empire showing when each of these people lived and their impact/contributions to the empire.

Lesson 6: The Violence of Ancient Rome
This lesson focuses on the extreme violence that permeated Roman society and how that violence may have attributed to the downfall of the Roman Empire.

Lesson 7: Technology and Medicine
Students will learn about Roman architecture, technology, and medicine by becoming teachers for a day in this lesson.

Lesson 8: Slaves, the Labor Force, and the Economy
In this lesson, students will examine the various social classes and learn about the critical role that slaves, freemen, and plebeians played in the day-to-day operations of the Roman Empire.

Rome: City and Empire
In this lesson from Discovery, students will understand that some communities evolve slowly; some communities start out more or less fully developed and that planned communities have advocates and detractors.

Ancient Rome
In this lesson from Discovery, students understand that Leaders of the Roman army and enemies of Rome are known to us not as faceless soldiers but as real men and that historical drama, like other historical fiction, is rooted in history but contains imaginary elements as well.
