Lesson Plans:

Lost Empires of Asia And Russia
In this lesson from Discovery, students research the events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917 and consider the results from the perspective of the aristocracy or the peasants.

The Rise of Russia through Peter the Great
In this lesson, students will identify the major time periods and rulers in Russian history and be introduced to the Russian Orthodox religious tradition.

Web Activity Lesson: The Eastern Slavs "Virtual Tour of Moscow:"
Students will use information from the Russia.Net Web site to learn about the historic buildings of Russia. Students will navigate the “Moscow sights” topic to read about the history of the city, the influence of the czars on the city’s architecture, and the purpose of some of the buildings. Students will then answer four questions and apply this information by writing a letter to a friend about the virtual visit to Moscow.

Design an Icon
In this lesson, students understand the meaning, importance and influence of the icon in the lives of Russians, learn about the Byzantine influence on Russian culture, ,and understand the themes represented in icon painting.

The Power of Architecture
In this lesson, students recognize the architecture of Russian culture, understand how the architecture of a people records their history, and understand how artistic elements—line, shape, color, and texture—are incorporated into architectural designs.
