In this lesson students examine the issues of religion, community, ethnicity, nationalism, and gender which combine to form the identity of the Muslim Middle Easterner.

Trekking to Timbuktu: Trade in Ancient West Africa
After completing this lesson, students will be able to: show how Islam spread from Arabia to Africa; and , describe how Muslim merchants contributed to the expansion of West African trade.
