Lesson Plans:

Martin Luther King, Jr. for Early Elementary  It helps early elementary students (especially kindergarteners) learn about the influence of MLK, Jr., why he is remembered, and the problems he worked to change.

A Penny for Your Thoughts  This is an outline for a week-long lesson usually taught in the month of February around President's Day.  It is an interdisciplinary study combining coin identification with a literature-based study of the Presidents represented on the coins.

George Washington  Students will develop an awareness historical figures (George Washington).

Celebrating the Chinese New Year  During this lesson, students will learn about the Chinese New Year celebration, including customs, symbols and their meanings, and roles of adults and children.  Following the lesson, students will compare the celebrations in the US and China.  The students will also draw a picture and write a sentence about their favorite holiday celebration.

Making Friends (Christopher Columbus - American Indians)  Students will develop an awareness of the lives of children in other places.

President's Day for Early Elementary/Special Education  This lesson helps special education/early elementary students learn about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and discuss how each demonstrated the character trait of honesty.

Martin Luther King, Jr.  A timeline of the life of Dr. King, as well as other activities.  Written by a second grade teacher.

Why Did the Plimoth Settlers Celebrate Thanksgiving?  Students will be able to understand why Thanksgiving was celebrated by the Pilgrims and describe how and why they celebrate Thanksgiving today.

 

Resources:

History Hunt: Living History:  Students use a variety of print and nonprint resources to gather and evaluate information including data from interviews. Students examine the historic moon landing by creating human tableaux. They discover how that historic event has affected our lives today.  Short video from United Streaming.

The Presidents of the United States: Learn more about the presidents from biographies and the changes they faced in the past and challenges yet to come.
