Lesson Plans:

Getting Lost
In this lesson, students practice their knowledge of the cardinal directions by having them describe the directions in their classroom. Students will practice figuring out the relative directions of other places (such as another classroom or the office) in relation to their classroom.

Postcards from Buster
There are 40 lesson plans to accompany this PBS television show.  Using these lessons, students will learn directional concepts, as well as many other social studies themes.

Directions/Traveling in Space The students will successfully and enthusiastically demonstrate their ability to move and travel through the gymnasium using different directions of forward, backward, up, down, left, and right and their ability to correctly follow directions as the students' movement in the different directions, behavior, and actions are observed by their teacher.

Flying Carpet  Children will use their imagination and sense of direction to travel the world on a flying carpet.

Geography: North, South, East, and West  The students will be able to locate North, South, East, and West; locate Pennsylvania (or whatever state you live in) on a map; name states to the north, south, east, and west in the United States; identify countries to the north, south, east, and west.

Peep and the Big Wide World: Wandering Beaver/Peep's New Friend:  Wandering Beaver Beaver Boy wants to visit Quack’s pond but keeps getting lost. (Quack is just hopeless at giving directions.) Oliver goes on a treasure hunt following maps made by Tessa. She drew some accurate maps using landmarks in the yard. Can Oliver find the treasure?  Short video from United Streaming.

Suggestions for English Language Learners: 
(E/B=Entering/Beginning, D=Developing, E=Expanding)
 

(E/B, D, E) Students locate areas in school on school map using names and pictures.
(E/B, D, E) Students visit areas located on the school map and match the word from the map to the title on the door or room (i.e.office).
