Mapping a Garden
T
he purpose of this lesson is to have the students gain an understanding of maps.

Where's My Dot?
A Problem-based Lesson-Everyone has his/her "dot" on the map. Some people call it their address. Your task will be to share with us what makes your "dot" special. 


What is a Map?
This lesson is designed to help students describe where they live, begin to develop an understanding of the geography of their neighborhood, and compare and contrast their area with other areas both near and far.

Playground Map
In this lesson, students will develop their map-making skills, as well as their sense of direction by creating a map of their playground.

 

Our Summer Vacation  This lesson will be used after a study of Alabama.  It will incorporate the theme of vacationing into information learned about state parks in Alabama.  Students will make a book about favorite parks in Alabama and favorite things to do in them.

 

Early Homes in the Midwest  The purpose of the lesson is to introduce students to the settlement of the Midwest through a discussion of the illustrations in the book Dandelions by Eve Bunting.

 

Resources:

Understanding Maps: Key to Everywhere:  This program gives an overview of maps. It explains direction, distance, scale, elevation, and grid maps. It also demonstrates points on a compass, how different types of maps show different things, what symbols are, and what a globe is.  Short video from United Streaming.

Maps: Where Am I?  It's hard for kids to relate the three-dimensional, horizon-oriented world they live in to the two-dimensional, vertically oriented "world" of maps. This film will help to solve that problem.  Short video from United Streaming.

Continents and Oceans:  Enchanted Learning.  Map and simple quiz; also good for overhead transparency activity.

Map Library: Browse through a selection of printable maps of the U.S. states, U.S. regions, continents, and more...

Sculpt a Planet:  Instructions about creating a paper mache planet.

Mega Maps:  Print Maps Big or Small 1 Page to Almost 7 Feet Across  U.S. Maps · World Map.

Suggestions for English Language Learners: 
(E/B=Entering/Beginning, D=Developing, E=Expanding)
 

(E/B, D, E) Students point to areas on map with teacher’s direction.
(E/B, D, E) Students look at a map and a globe and tell what they see that is the same and different.
