Learning Activities/Performance Tasks: (Include student preparation and performance) 1. Display objects and books related to farms and farm animals. Teacher will use farm read alouds to familiarize students with farm life. 2. Allow students to take part in oral discussions related to what we know, what we want to learn, and what we have learned (KWL). 3. Begin PowerPoint presentation. When first slide appears discuss the farm picture. Tell students we will be learning more about farm animals as we watch the presentation. Sing “Old MacDonald”. When the second slide appears, have students name animals that may be found on a farm. 4. Use PowerPoint presentation to introduce farm unit. Match beginning sounds with farm animal’s name. For example: picture of sheep, cues about sheep, students identify the animal and demonstrate the “sh” sound. 5. Use link from PowerPoint presentation to introduce and demonstrate Kidspiration activity of sorting animals which are found on a farm and the animals which are not found on a farm. 6. At end of the PowerPoint, review the names of animals that are found on a farm. Sing “Old MacDonald”. Have students make the beginning sounds of the animal names. 7. Add new information from PowerPoint to KWL chart. 8. Allow students to work through independent activity using Kidspiration as a computer center to sort animals. 9. As a culminating activity, a field trip to local farm for hands-on experiences with farm animals. Use digital camera to take photos. 10. Return to school and create a class book using photos from field trip.
Rubrics, Assessment & Evaluation: Teacher observations and a rubric will be used to evaluate students as they identify animals and make beginning sounds, sort animals, and participate in oral discussions. Evaluation Rubric Learning Environment: The majority of the lesson will take place in the classroom. The students may be taken to the media center to locate books about farms and farm animals. The culminating field trip activity occurs on a farm.
