Pioneer Day

Teachers:  Genie Burks, Margaret Stewart, Judy Underwood

Focus of Unit:  Second and third grade social studies and language arts
 

Rationale: To compare and contrast pioneer life with life as we know it today

 
Standards:

            Curriculum:

1.  Read and apply appropriate strategies in all content areas

2.  Read and comprehend a variety of material in all content areas

3.  Develop appropriate listening and communication behaviors

4.  Use appropriate sources for obtaining information

5.  Use available technology for expression

6.  Exhibit an increased facility in self-expression in a variety of   forms

7.  Acquire and interpret information.

8.  Organize ideas and communicate, both orally and written, fluently with peers and for varied audiences and purposes.

9. Use pause, volume, pitch, and tone.

10.  Compare transportation and occupations of families now and long ago

11.  Describe relationships between early settlements and the natural environment.

Technology:

1.       Use a variety of media and technology resources for directed and
  independent learning activities across the curriculum.

2.       Use electronic resources to access and retrieve information.

                         3.   Identify the Internet as a resource for information

4.       Utilize information from a locally approved Internet web site.

                         5.  Use technology resources for problem solving.

 

Learning Activities

Students will:

  1. Work in small groups using various Internet sites and books to research pioneer life.

·         transportation 

·         foods and cooking           

·          toys and games                                                                    

·         clothing           

·         home

  1. Follow written steps to construct a covered wagon.
     
  1. Follow the steps in a recipe to make homemade butter.

4.   Gather materials for at least three pioneer games or toys and demonstrate for the class.

5.   Read and follow the steps to create a log cabin.

      6.  Use internet instructions to make a hat or bonnet and model pioneer apparel.

     7.  Use the digital camera to document group projects and create a PowerPoint       
          presentation.

           8. Write a brief report comparing research findings to present day life.

      9.  Make an oral presentation of findings and projects.
