Lesson Plans:

Figurative Language Awards Ceremony
In this lesson students will use their background knowledge of figurative language. They will listen to texts read aloud to them, as well as explore texts to find their favorite examples of similes, metaphors, and personification. The students will nominate their terms, vote on them, and write an acceptance speech incorporating figurative language of their own.

All About Alliteration: Responding to Literature Through a Poetry Link
This lesson uses a read aloud to teach about alliteration. It has students brainstorm alliterative word lists using a variety or print and online resources. Students create and illustrate a poem using the poetry they have read as a framework for their writing.

Idioms
Lesson plan for identifying and using idioms in everyday language and poetry.

Discovering Language Arts:  Style, Structure, and Tone:  From descriptive language to the variety of sentence structures to the elements within a paragraph, introduce elementary students to the stylistic and rhetorical aspects of writing. You can watch all of the video or just the segment on figurative language.  This is hosted on Discovery Education unitedstreaming, and to access it you must have your user name and password.  All teachers in Alabama can get this information from their school's media specialist or technology support teacher.
