Introduction

If you look outside today, what do you see? Are there any clouds in the sky? Is it raining? The weather is always changing around us! It helps us make decisions everyday. Do we need an umbrella or sunglasses? Are we going to be able to go to the playground today? As we learn more about the weather, we can make better decisions. Let’s learn about the weather around us!

Task

You are a Junior Forecaster on TV. Using the information you will collect throughout the webquest, you will be able to make a forecast of the weather. There will be books to read, websites to visit, information to collect and record and games to play. You will be working closely with your fellow forecasters to determine daily weather activities.

Process

1.    As a class, listen to the teacher read a weather book. Discuss weather and how it affects you everyday. Explore the classroom and library for weather books of interest to you. Be sure to record the title and author of the book. After reading the book, discuss with another forecaster or the teacher.

2.  Visit the following website. This site was designed by a first grade class while they were learning about weather.

http://www.wcbritt.org/BrittES/weather/index.html   (weather words and descriptions)

1.    Check today’s weather and record on the weather calendar. Does the forecast match the weather outside?

http://www.wpmi.com/weather/   (Mobile, AL weather report)  *If Kidspiration does not work, see below.

2.  With your fellow forecasters, create an email to send to a local meteorologist. Try to come up with at least 3 questions to ask. Remember to include how today’s weather looks and if the weather matches the forecast. Send your email to davidglenn@clearchannel.com or to jloznicka@wpmi.com when it has been approved by your teacher.

3.   Using the paint program, create a weather page to be included in our class weather book. Remember to include a picture and at least one sentence about your picture.

4.   You will be given the opportunity to complete three weather games. The first is a weather puzzle. The second is a Guess the Covered Word game using weather words. The final game is 10 Questions about weather.

5.  Complete a Kidspiration about weather. Your final project should include a main idea, details and pictures. *If Kidspiration does not work, see below.

6.  Make a weather bag to show the steps in the water cycle. Be sure to label your bag with all the components of the water cycle.    Directions

*If Kidspiration does not open, go directly to the Kidspiration program. For the weather calendar, go to the section titled science and open. Once in this section, continue to ‘This Week’s Weather.’ Complete as directed. For your Kidspiration project, go to new picture and create your Kidspiration as directed.
